29 – 30 November 2014: Weekend tour to Nylsvley Nature Reserve

Ulrich Ecoventures

The weekend at Nylsvley Nature Reserve was a great success. Although the Nyl River and its floodplain were fairly dry, birding at Vogelfontein was extremely good. Highlights were a juvenile ‘ringtail’ harrier (probably Montagu’s Harrier) and an African Pipit nest which I nearly stepped on. Nylsvley’s bushveld and woodland never disappoint. White-throated Robin-Chats displayed by singing and spreading their tails, five cuckoo species were recorded and a variety of LBJ’s were positively identified. Even the mammal sightings were rewarding: a herd of eight mature kudu bulls eyed us suspiciously, while Gert spotted a serval on the floodplain. Everybody’s life list grew over the weekend.
